2. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) / Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
SLS are known to cause eye, skin, lung irritants with its potential to combine with other chemicals to form nitrosamines, a type of carcinogen. With these, it can lead to kidney and respiratory damage. Usually found in forming products such as in shampoo, body wash/cleanser, mascara and acne treatment.
As deemed by The International Agency for Research on Carcinogens (IARC), this chemical was deemed as a human carcinogen. Its main function is to help prevent bacteria growth and can be found nearly one in five beauty and cosmetic products. It is known to cause allergic skin reactions and it may also be harmful to the immune system which is linked to causing cancer. This chemical can be found in hair dye, hair straighteners, false eyelash adhesives, shampoos and nail products.
Parabens are widely used preservatives that prevent the growth of bacteria, mold and yeast in cosmetic products. It contains estrogen-mimicking properties that are associated with increased risk of breast cancer. These chemicals can be found in facial cleansers, shampoo, body washes, deodorants, and makeup.
5. Oxybenzone (benzophenone), Octinoxate, and Homosalate
Research has shown oxybenzone can build up in fatty tissues and is linked to allergic reactions. And it has been increasingly linked to early puberty in girls, low sperm count and male infertility. These chemicals can pose a risk to reproductive systems and cause hormone-related cancers in men and women. Found in sunscreens, lip balms, and other products with SPF.
